not just a \u2018green label\u2019.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52f166a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"52f166a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There comes a specific point in the life of some SMEs.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not when the company was founded.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not when the first important client turns up.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not when the first foreign market opens.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is when an investor asks:<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you already have an ESG risk assessment?\u201d<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silence.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Downcast eyes.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone is coughing.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, as usual, comes the immortal line:<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re working on it.\u201d<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which translates as: \u201cWe have a page on our website that says \u2018sustainability\u2019 and perhaps features a photo of a forest.\u201d<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that these days, ESG is no longer just the \u2018let\u2019s look good\u2019 department.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not the green sticker.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not the leaflet with the child, the tree and the sunset.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not even the sort of word you\u2019d put in a company profile when you\u2019re two lines short of filling the page.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESG is far more annoying.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because he asks questions.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simple questions, but unpleasant ones.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tipo:<\/p><ul><li>Who really calls the shots in the company?<\/li><li>What happens if the founder goes missing for two weeks?<\/li><li>Are suppliers assessed or selected using the \u2018lowest cost\u2019 approach?<\/li><li>Do key staff members stay because they are motivated, or because they haven\u2019t updated their LinkedIn profiles yet?<\/li><li>Can we back up what we say about sustainability, or is it just a leap of faith?<\/li><li>If a bank, a fund or a major client comes along, do we come across as solid, or do we come across as \u2018heroic in an artisanal sort of way\u2019?<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the point.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Italian SMEs are extremely good at making products.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much less at <a href=\"https:\/\/welladvisory.it\/en\/approfondimenti\/strategia-add-on-pmi\/\">to make it clear how they work<\/a>.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have qualities, connections, skills and business acumen.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But ultimately, governance is down to the owner.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The supply chain is in an Excel file called \u201cfinal suppliers \u2013 the very last 3\u201d.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These traditions are passed down orally, just like Greek myths.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainability is \u201cwe\u2019ve always done these things\u201d.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And perhaps that\u2019s true, too.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the world of investors, banks and major clients, \u2018trust\u2019 is not a metric.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know that\u201d is not an indicator.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve never had any problems\u201d is not a risk management system.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is where ESG comes into its own.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not because it turns the entrepreneur into a climate activist with a stainless-steel water bottle.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But because it forces the company to take a hard look at itself.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And to ask oneself:<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are we really well-organised?<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are we really eligible for funding?<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are we really scalable?<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we really are <a href=\"https:\/\/welladvisory.it\/en\/approccio\/\">ready for an industrial or financial partner<\/a>?<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or are we simply very good at surviving, thanks to three key people, two long-standing suppliers and a worrying amount of WhatsApp?<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For an SME, working on ESG does not mean striving for perfection.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means becoming easier to understand.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tidier.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More justifiable.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More credible in the eyes of those who have to invest money, credit, reputation or trust.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because, at the end of the day, ESG isn\u2019t going to save the world in the next quarter.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More modestly, it serves to prevent the world \u2014 banks, customers, investors, regulators, the supply chain \u2014 from saving itself at our expense.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moral of the story: sustainability is no longer just the smart outfit you put on when an investor comes round.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s more like having your car serviced.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also postpone it.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t complain if they stop you.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4061eb8 elementor-widget__width-inherit elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"4061eb8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" They need verifiable information on governance, the supply chain and risks. Even where it is no longer a legal requirement, it remains a market demand in every transaction.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ecadad elementor-vertical-align-top elementor-widget elementor-widget-image-box\" data-id=\"1ecadad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image-box.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-image-box-wrapper\"><div class=\"elementor-image-box-content\"><h5 class=\"elementor-image-box-title\">How does an SME prepare for ESG?<\/h5><p class=\"elementor-image-box-description\">By making their operations transparent: clear figures, understandable processes, a governance structure that does not rely on a single person, and a traceable supply chain.
